The Dark Lake by Sarah Bailey

I guess I didn't mind this crime novel...
it has a too-invested damaged cop at its centre which should make it a cracker of a read...
...however I found Woodstock a very uninteresting and in many ways unlikable main character, I get it that we don't always have to like the protagonist, but I found her just, well insipid...
...it also dragged on way too long for me, the whole thing could have been much more suspenseful if it was wrapped up sooner.

I Know Who You Are by Alice Feeney

So Feeney gives us all the ingredients for what should be a bloody good read, it does after all have...

✅suspense
✅the thrill factor
✅a degree of excitement
✅and some beautiful writing
...however the ending...
... in one word
sucked!

The Liars by Petronella McGovern

Tricky to say if I really enjoyed this one, I understood the messages McGovern was desperate to get across...

...like how where this story is set in a town built on the blood of its indigenous people, reality check, as are the majority of towns on our planet, and the toxic male influences that are cultivated from generation to generation...nothing new there, unfortunately.

If I'm totally honest it felt like McGovern wanted to infuse her tale with as many topical issues as possible without really doing a deep dive into any of them...

...is it a tale of courage, of exposing lies? Hmmm I'll let you make your own decision on that one...

The Second Cut by Louise Welsh

Now if you haven't read The Cutting Room by the delightful Louise Welsh, why the hell not? If you relish reading tales of crime with a high degree of wry humour and a continuous sense of dread then you must take to your nearest book store/library and order The Cutting Room toot sweet...

I was thrilled to be reunited with Rilke, he really is my most favourite auctioneer...

Welsh gives us a dark story, with humour and just the right amount of a twisty mystery...we get a thought-provoking tale that keeps us invested in the action, mainly due to her ability to give us such positively engaging character perspectives...

let us hope we don't have to wait too long for the next book!

Hope to Die by Cara Hunter

Hunter does what she usually does, provides us with clever little chapters offering us different points of view...

Is it a gripping page turner?

Hmm...perhaps not the addictive crime thriller I had hoped for but it does what we expect, it gives us DI Fawley and his team investigating a burglary gone wrong, with connections to a high-profile case from the past...

You, Me & The Sea by Elizabeth Haynes

I do enjoy an Elizabeth Haynes tale and this one does not disappoint, it's set on a Scottish Island that really makes you want to visit Scotland...I know right!
What Haynes does so well is give us believable characters, and in Rachel and Fraser we get two very credible (credible = f*#ked up!) imperfect and emotionally stuck humans...
...there is an abundance of birds too, which just adds to the charm of this tale.
I think airbnb-ing in a lighthouse, on a windswept, remote Scottish Isle could be the next big thing...

The Devil Stone by Caro Ramsay

DCI Caplin is a troubled detective from Glasgow, she is a complex character with family issues and a past that is only hinted at in this, ...
